RF Transceiver and Analog Base Band chipset for TD-SCDMA Handset (“Zhou”): CL4020+CL4520
As the only company so far entrusted with national project on TD-SCDMA and “863” project by MoST (Ministry of Science and Technology), Comlent develops and owns all IP of its TD-SCDMA chipset CL4020 and CL4050, which are RF transceiver and ABB (Analog Base Band) respectively. The chipset is the only solution so far who can interface with all the domestic TD-SCDMA base band solution suppliers, i.e. Spreadtrum, COMMIT, T3G, Datang and CYIT.
The chipset is specifically designed for China 3G, TD-SCDMA in CMOS technology. Both chips, CL4020 and CL4520 are packaged in a 48-pin, 7mm x 7mm QFN package. Transmit EVM of CL4020 is below 4% while the TD-SCDMA specification requires EVM below 17%. The PLL’s integrated phase noise (1kHz-640kHz) is less than 0.85 degree. Noise figure of the whole receive channel is less than 4dB. In general, the chipset’s performance meets 3GPP TD-SCDMA specification and is world class. Advantages of CL4520 are low cost, high dynamic range, accurate DC offset cancellation, and accurate digital gain control, etc.

Because of its advanced technology and excellent performance in CMOS technology, the technical paper to introduce this design was disclosed in Feb. 2007 on ISSCC, the worldwide top conference on IC design, which indicates China’s CMOS TD-SCDMA chipset has reached world class performance. And it was also the 1st time that Chinese company shows the design for a whole IC on ISSCC during its 54-year history.

Below are CL4020’s features and advantages.

Low cost
- Using CMOS technology with low cost;
- Small die size;
- High integration with built-in low pass filter and ?-? fractional synthesizer, less external components and overall low cost;
- Potential of further integration with base band IC resulting in SoC with ultra low cost.

Low power consumption
- Simple circuitry with zero-IF architecture and low power consumption;
- Low voltage power supply with advanced deep sub-micron process;
- 90mA current

State-of-art circuit design
- Digital detection and loop-back cancellation technology to ease design difficulty;
- Digital control on RF front-end to simplify analog circuit design and optimize performance;

Specific for China 3G
- Dual band, 1880MHz-1920MHz and 2010MHz-2025MHz for TD-SCDMA;
- Interface compatible with all base band IC suppliers in China;
- Support single carrier HSDPA with qualified transmit and receive EVM, which will be demonstrated in 2007;

Below are CL4520’s features and advantages.
- DAC for Automatic Frequency Control;
- ADC with high dynamic range;
- Digital gain control for transmit with accurate step size;
- Support multiple reference clocks: 13MHz/26MHz/19.2MHz;
- Bi-directional 3-wire interface.

Comlent has been applying more than 10 patents on this design to claim the core technology developed in 3G, which is also a solid base for Comlent’s long-term development.
